Use this table to find the correct Generic Volume License Key (GVLK) to use our Key Management Service (KMS) with the edition of Windows installed on your computer.
You'll use the appropriate GVLK to update installations of Windows that used MAK activation to the new (November 2010) MKS activation method.
If you are unsure of the exact version of Windows, click on the orb, right-click , and select from the menu that appears.

In the table below, Windows versions ending with 'E' are the international versions, and those ending with 'N' are the versions without Windows Media Player.
@hobbit666 said in Windows 10 Pro Volume License (KMS) to OEM/BIOS: Home laptops. Supplier 'gave us' some Win10Pro keys. The laptops were then wiped and re-installed with Win10Pro but with a VL iso and the KMS key. Licenses do not expire from Volume License, once activated that is it. Note: KMS keys are provided by default for some products on the Volume Licensing website, including Windows 7, meaning that these KMS keys will be the only visible keys on the website. If you determine that MAK keys are more appropriate for your organisation, read the instructions below in 'Obtaining MAK Keys When KMS Is the Default.' Standard VLKs.
- Jan 13, 2019 Compared to MAK, KMS should be your preferable activation method as long as you meet the activation threshold and the (very) basic requirements for deploying KMS (which are DNS and TCP/IP connectivity between the clients and the KMS host).
- Volume: KMS Client and Volume MAK product keys, are volume license keys that are not-for-resale. They are issued by organizations for use on client computers associated in some way with the organization. Volume license keys may not be transferred with the computer if the computer changes ownership.
- Enterprise buys Windows license in bulk under Volume Licensing Program. There are two types of keys under this scheme – MAK and KMS. You can use MAK keys only once, while KMS keys can be used again.

Note: You cannot use a GVLK by itself to activate a Microsoft product. They only work in conjunction with a KMS server.

MAK (Multiple Activation Key) product key, as its name implied, is a product key that provided by Microsoft to its customers on volume licensing agreements to activate many computers running Windows operating system or Office productivity suite. Corporate clients of Microsoft has a choice of activating the systems running in their organizations through KMS host or MAK product key. MAK product key allows companies to activate against Microsoft’s server instead of having installed and maintained a server running KMS service.
One MAK product keys can potentially activate hundreds or even thousands of computers running Windows Vista or Windows 7, or Office 2010 (separate type of product keys for two different products required). The number of activations can be done by each product key is determined by the software licensing agreements (and the money paid to Microsoft, of course).

Volume License Kms Vs Mak Keys
Once a MAK product key is been used to activate many machines, most administrators will probably lose count of actual times of remaining activations that can be done with the serial codes. In addition, some MAK product keys may have been “leaked” to Internet, or “shared” with outsiders, causing the numbers of remaning activation count available dwindling faster than expected.
Microsoft provides a Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT) which can be used to check how many activations remain unused for a MAK product key.
If you have a MAK product key, you can check how many activations remain using Volume Activation Management (VAMT) Tool:
Kms Vs Mak Key
- Download and install Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT).
- Go to Product Keys in the left pane.
- Enter the Product Key and a Remark (as description) under the “Add Product Key” section.
- Click on Verify button, and click on Add Product Key button.
- Highlight the product key in the list below, and click on Refresh Product Key Data Online on the right Actions pane.
- Check the product keys listing frame for remaining activation count, which means the number of times that product key can still be used to activate a Microsoft Windows or Office system.
